About Jackson County
Welcome to Jackson County, a vibrant and diverse region in the southwestern corner of Oklahoma. Home to 24,785 residents as of the 2020 census, our county seat, Altus, serves as the heart of this thriving community. Spanning 804 square miles, Jackson County offers a unique blend of landscapes, including the Red Bed Plains, the Gypsum Hills, and the Wichita Mountains, all enriched by the Red River and its tributaries.
Jackson County boasts a rich history of agricultural excellence, with major crops like cotton, wheat, corn, alfalfa, and hay. In the late 1940s, barley and sorghum emerged as significant contributors to our agricultural output. Our livestock industry is robust, featuring horses, cattle, mules, swine, and sheep.
Beyond agriculture, Jackson County is a hub of economic activity and development. The Altus Air Force Base stands as our largest non-farm employer, playing a crucial role in our community. Additionally, we host a variety of manufacturers, including Altus Athletic Manufacturing, Bar-S Foods Company, and the Republic Gypsum plant. These industries reflect the dynamic economic landscape of our county.

Empowering Local Development
In June 2024, the Jackson County Commissioners made a strategic decision to enhance local development by voting to be recognized as the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for unincorporated areas within the county. This pivotal move ensures that businesses can operate in compliance with building codes without the delays associated with the State Fire Marshal's office. By streamlining the approval process, we are committed to creating a more hospitable environment with quicker turnaround times for all development projects.
